Normally I got my coffee and baked good fix at The Misty Mocha. Everything Cleo made was delicious, and it killed two birds with one stone. But after hours of farm chores, I was starving for something more substantial. The Hazy Day Cafe had been on my wish list to go to for weeks now, so I pulled into the parking lot anticipating all the things I could eat.

Their online menu looked fantastic, plus I wanted the opportunity to speak to the owner. Raymond Henderson seemed like the kind of person who took various odd jobs. It was feasible he’d worked here at one time or another, but even if he hadn’t, the owner might know or have heard of him.

The outside looked like a cute little cottage, painted bright white and decorated with hanging baskets full of blooming vines. The door was a pretty dark blue, and when I pressed inside, I felt like I’d traveled back in time at least seventy years.

My boots clicked on top of scarred wooden floors, and the scent of maple and cinnamon tickled my nose. Red and white checkered cloths dotted each of the tables, the tops decorated with small glass vases of carnations.

“Welcome to Hazy Day,” a young woman said. “Just one today?”

“Yes, just me.” I smiled as she gathered a large menu and a small one with the specials, then gestured for me to follow.

She chose a table with a window, overlooking Hazy Mountain. I settled in and sighed when she asked if I wanted coffee.

“Always.”

The woman laughed. “I’ll be right back, hon. Our specials are on the small menu and available all day.” She wandered away, and I shrugged off my lightweight cardigan before I pulled the menu over.

When she returned, I ordered the pancake special.

“Anything else?” she asked.

“Is the owner here today?”

She lowered the notebook and stared at me for a long moment. “Is there an issue?”

“Oh no, not at all. I’m new to the area and I had a few questions for him. That’s all.”

Relief flickered in her eyes. “He’s in the kitchen, so it might be a little while before he makes it over.”

“No problem. Thank you so much.”

Ten minutes later, a tall, handsome man stopped by my table. Dark-haired, olive skinned, light brown eyes, he was a traffic stopper. He had a chiseled jaw line, full lips, and a straight, proud nose.

“I’m Martin Rossi. Sarah said you wished to speak with me?” His tone was curious but polite.

“Maggie Ashby.”

His eyes lit. “Ah! The new bee farmer. It’s a pleasure. I’ve been meaning to get over to the property to introduce myself. You’re the talk of the town.”

I winced.

Martin chuckled. “This was before all the other unfortunate events, I promise. I’ve heard you are creating some interesting honey out there. I’m interested to see if we can work together. Hazy Day is a farm-to-table cafe. I like knowing where all my ingredients come from. The closer to my restaurant, the better.”

Delight filled me. “I’d be happy to talk.
